Catherine Kao (Kao Lien-Hsiu)
When I moved to Yingge and set up my pottery studio, I felt like a salmon
returning home to spawn. After traveling around the world, my love for ceramics
called me back to my place of birth.
I have come to know that every path in my life has karma and a particular
fate. Fate and karma have birthed and nourished my own practice of pottery for
more than 10 years. The history of the world’s art of ceramics mirrors the
evolutionary history of human civilization. Scholars and artists agree that
this art form has recorded the lives and thoughts of every generation. This
might be one of the reasons why this ancient art form has never lost
popularity. I am deeply touched by its power for depth and breadth. I feel
blessed to enjoy pottery as my life’s passion.I love the rich quality of wood
fired pots and I am very grateful to have the opportunity to build and to do
wood firing with a few close friends.
Being a volunteer at Yingge Ceramics Museum has been a wonderful
experience in my life. My creative process requires me to look deeply into my
inner world. It is through this process that I have learned to open myself to
share a piece of my thoughts that I usually had kept hidden. The quality of
information available at the Museum as well as the exhibitions have broadened
my horizons and enriched my life. Most importantly, I have made friends with
many good and like-minded people.

Statement
The inspiration for
my creations comes from perceptions and fine details of my life, which I have
collected in the stillness of my heart. My motto is "doing pottery is
life, doing life is pottery”. I have no esoteric or hidden theory or special
subject; I create pottery because of a deep need to create and express myself
and this urge is unexplainable to me. As a contemporary potter, I hope to leave
traces of my daily life and thoughts and views embedded in the forms the clay
takes, through my technique, skill and imagination. I find joy and satisfaction
in the creative process and I consider myself to be a happy potter.
Pottery is the
perfect combination of culture, art and science. The plasticity of clay enables
the potter to make many textural changes. “The Eternal Fashion” – the Tromp
l'oeil series simulates realism using a technique which transforms the clay
with a semi-matte glaze. It mimics the texture of leather and expresses
fashion which exists in contemporary life. As a multi-faceted representation of
ceramic art, this series tries to depict the realm of life art.
Happy
Pottery Life
Holding a piece of clay in my hand
It is warm and soft
Musing gives flight to ideas
Time passes
briskly, I am lost in joy
My face shining with ecstasy
My heart full
of joy
Dream and clay are dancing together
What a wonderful and happy pottery life
