Breathing Life into Clay- from friend

Jennifer Betuzzi

I am pleased to write a note about a wonderful, blossoming new ceramic artist.  I have known Catherine Kao for over 15 years, first as a co-worker and then as a friend.  After a busy life as a wife, mother, and business woman, Catherine decided to turn her efforts and skills to ceramic art.

Catherine first began her studies in ceramic art at the TRU University in Kamloops, BC, Canada.  It was soon evident to me and to everyone who looked at any of her artistic endeavors (including photography and web design) that an artist was born.

Catherine's next step was to find a master teacher in Taiwan.  Soon, she began her apprenticeship with a well-known ceramics master.  I know that she spent many happy hours at the art studio creating unusual works of art, both traditional (tea bowls) and non-traditional (shoes and purses).  Her non-traditional ceramic works were so life like that one could almost feel them breathing.  Her traditional art works embody serenity and simplicity.  An experience of Catherine's art will give you a glimpse into her soul.

She began to learn all the techniques of her ceramic tradition and spent many hours practicing and practicing and practicing.  This tells you something about Catherine's dedication and tenacity.  This work included long hours stoking a wood burning kiln and experimenting with glazes, both ancient glazes and more modern techniques.  No stone has been left unturned in her search for the perfect glaze.

Not only is this woman incredibly talented, she has a humble spirit that I have always admired.  Her methodical approach to all she does, one step at a time, has turned Catherine into an artist and the world is richer because of it.
